Dean Slanvich, chairman of the International Engine of the year awards and editor of Engine Technology International magazine said, “This is a fitting victory for a truly remarkable engine. For a three-cylinder to power a vehicle like the Ford Focus with such ease proves that the future is very, very bright for the internal combustion engine. Power, response and very good real-world fuel consumption figures are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to this engine and what it offers drivers today. Well done, Ford!”
This peaky performer is a 1-litre inline-three turbo petrol motor, delivering a jaw-dropping 120 bhp power and 170 Nm torque, and an overboost function that adds a thrust of 30 Nm. Although this engine is quite a mammoth in the 1-litre category, it gives a stunning 19 kmpl fuel-economy.
Apart from the 2012 International Engine of the Year award, the Ecoboost has also bagged the ‘Best New Engine’ and ‘Best Engine Under 1.0-litre’ award at the Engine Expo in Stuttgart, Germany. Over 76 journalists from 35 countries voted for the categories and Ford took home the award after 13 years.
The 1.0-litre EcoBoost made its debut in the Ford Focus in Europe. The carmaker plans to expand the EcoBoost line to upcoming C-Max and B-Max models. In India, the Ecoboost engine will arrive with the Ford EcoSport SUV in a few months.
