Guwahati High Court has reversed its earlier order of banning small cars in Assam that don’t meet international crash safety standards. In the new order the court has said that cars will have to comply with safety standards set in India by Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) and as long as they meet those requirements they can ply on the roads of Assam. The court issued the order after admitting a PIL filed by SIAM which challenged Assam state transport department’s move to ban these cars. The new order would bring much relief to carmakers like Maruti Suzuki and Hyundai.
Earlier the court had banned sale of all cars and quadricycles under 1500kg that didn’t meet international standard of crash safety. The ban was imposed keeping in mind the hilly and mountainous terrain of the state. Following the ban sale of cars in this category fell as much as by 60 percent in the state. Worst hit were popular models like Maruti Alto 800, Hyundai Eon, Honda Jazz etc. Now that the ban has been lifted sale of these cars are expected to pick up once again.
