Maruti Eeco, the big bonked van which is prominent in the taxi fleet of Mumbai city, is about to go diesel in the next couple of years, said a source.
Maruti Eeco diesel launch will happen in 2016.
Expected to be powered by a 800cc diesel engine that will produce 35bhp and an approximate fuel economy of 25kmpl as per ARAI. It is expected of boasting a turbocharger too.
“Maruti is working to adapt the 800cc diesel engine, its first self-developed engine, for the Eeco van. The engine will first be launched in the new Maruti LCV (codeY9T) and the Celerio this fiscal,” said a source. Eeco will progressively replace the Maruti Omni van too.
Expectedly, the diesel Eeco will be sold mostly in rural areas, maybe as a people carrier. And if the aforementioned purpose would possibly turn into a reality in the future, then Tata Ace Magic and the Mahindra Maxximo will be its stiff competitor. “Today, the share of rural markets in total volumes stands at around 32%, from about 28% two years back and low single digits in 2008,” said an official of Maruti. Top Picks in these markets are Alto, WagonR, Omni and Eeco.
Hopefully, it can be tendered the upcoming Maruti LCV may share this same 800cc diesel engine.
Currently, Eeco is powered by a 1200cc petrol engine tracing its roots back to the G13 1300cc unit from Maruti Esteem and other vehicles of that time. A CNG option is also rolled out for Eeco, the one that the fleet operators used the most. 1200cc BS IV compliant engine of Eeco delivers 73 bhp @ 6000 rpm, with a torque of 101Nm @ 3000 rpm.
